Ozone Therapy West Kelowna

What is ozone therapy?

Ozone therapy is a holistic way to treat various dental conditions.

Ozone consists of three oxygen atoms bonded together. That one extra atom creates a gas with negatively charged particles. Why is this important? It’s because viruses, bacteria, and fungi are positively charged. Therefore, the ozone cancels out (kills) the organisms that cause many health issues, including dental diseases.

Ozone is:

  • Antibacterial
  • Antifungal
  • Antiviral.

How does ozone therapy differ from antibiotics or antifungal treatments?

The main difference is the side effects. While ozone has virtually zero, pharmaceuticals can have many adverse side effects, including:

  • Abdominal cramps and diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Yeast infections
  • Headaches
  • Allergic reactions (like swelling and itching)
  • Liver damage (certain antifungals).

The great thing about ozone therapy is that it’s not just good for your dental health – it’s good for your overall health.

Medications, particularly antibiotics (which treat both tooth and gum infections), destroy all bacteria – good and bad. When this happens, your immune response is compromised. Additionally, a lack of sufficient healthy gut bacteria is linked to mental health conditions, like depression.

What are the benefits of ozone therapy treatment?

Ozone treatment can be used during nearly any kind of dental procedure, including:

  • Cleanings
  • Dental surgery
  • Decay removal
  • Treatment of dental infections, including tooth and gum infections
  • TMJ pain and muscle pain

Ozone can also help desensitize your teeth, which is something many patients struggle with these days. If you have sensitive teeth, you know how wonderful it would be to bite into some ice cream or drink a cup of ice-cold water without feeling like your teeth are receiving an electric shock.

How is ozone administered?

Dr. Shauna Palmer has a machine that produces the ozone. Dr. Palmer loads a syringe with either ozone gas or ozonated water depending on the use. For instance, when you receive a filling, Dr. Palmer will remove the decay. Then, they’ll administer the ozone into the tooth to ensure that they destroy all the harmful bacteria. After that, your tooth is filled.

In the past, your dentist wouldn’t know for sure if they’d been able to remove 100% of the bacteria within the tooth. They could be confident that the decay was removed – but not the bacteria that led to the decay in the first place. One of the most significant ozone therapy benefits is that the chance of recurrent decay is significantly reduced.

We also have topical ozonated olive oil for purchase that can be used at home for cuts, burns, rashes, etc. as first-aid treatment.

Is ozone therapy in dentistry safe?

Ozone Therapy West Kelowna Dentiset

When administered in the appropriate dose, with professional technology and administration, ozone therapy is safe and has proven to offer many positive outcomes. From healing tooth decay, to helping heal periodontal gum disease and more, ozone therapy is widely known as a powerful, holistic form of dental therapy for painful, problematic issues.

While North America is continuing to explore its use of ozone therapy in dentistry and other health related fields, ozone therapy is already widely established in Europe and South America. According to Colgate, ozone therapy may become "a star player in dentistry in the not-so-distant future".

At Health & Beauty Dentistry, we ensure to use standardized, medical-grade oxygen to generate pure ozone for our treatments, which can then be safely used in both gas and liquid form.

An article in The Open Dentistry Journal explains there have been rare cases where ozone, inhaled as a gas, has created toxic side effects. However, these complications are very infrequent at 0.0007 per application. As with many other medical and dental procedures, much of the safety rests in how the ozone is administered and how much of it is used in the process.

With full transparency, we are very pleased to say we have not once encountered an issue during or after the administration of ozone therapy. The opposite has held true for us with many patients who have benefited from this non-invasive, specialized type of treatment. Your health is our number one priority. At any moment in time, if we recognize a treatment is unsafe or there is risk for harm, we will NOT continue or pursue treatment.
